Zach Wilson and the New York Jets experienced a very bitter evening in the NFL’s Monday Night Game (November 6th, 2023, local time).
The quarterback, replacement for Aaron Rodgers, who was seriously injured at the start of the season, was brought down eight times in the 6:27 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers and suffered his team’s fourth defeat.
Offensively, running back Austin Ekeler, among others, shone for the Chargers with two touchdowns. The encounter was decided by the Chargers’ defense: Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipuloto laid the foundation for the guests’ success with two sacks each. Both teams now have a record of 4:4.
“I’m just really proud of the guys. We had some really tough losses and were able to regroup,” Chargers defenseman Joey Bosa said.
Record for Justin Herbert
There were nice milestones for two professionals from Los Angeles: quarterback Justin Herbert reached 1,500 successful passes faster than anyone before him. He only needed 57 games. Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford’s record previously stood at 62 games. Pass receiver Keenan Allen now has more than 10,000 receiving yards in his career.
The Giants will miss Jones until the end of the season
The New York Giants will be without quarterback Daniel Jones for the rest of the season. As feared, the playmaker tore his cruciate ligament and will be out for months. Jones was sacked by Maxx Crosby in the final quarter of the 6:30 defeat at the Las Vegas Raiders, but was initially able to continue playing.
It’s the next setback for the American: The 26-year-old returned to the starting lineup on Sunday after a neck injury that kept him out of action for three games. The Giants are not having a good season with two wins from nine games and now have to improvise a lot. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who filled in for Jones for most of October, was injured last week against the New York Jets. Rookie Tommy DeVito, who replaced Jones on Sunday, will likely continue in the quarterback role.
NFL boss believes in more games in Germany
Meanwhile, NFL boss Roger Goodell gave German fans hope for more games beyond 2025. “I believe that there will be games in Germany even after 2025. We will not say goodbye to the markets that were important for our growth. And Germany was crucial for our growth,” said the 64-year-old.
The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins (21:14) on Sunday was only the second game of the regular season in Germany. Another one is coming up on Sunday (November 12th, 2023) with the encounter between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt. The league will play one or more games in Munich or Frankfurt every year until at least 2025.
