Football EM: Finland throws national coach out

After the EM preliminary round with a clear defeat against Germany and criticism of her leadership style, Finland’s national women’s soccer coach Anna Signeul has to vacate her place.

The Finnish Football Association announced that it was jointly decided that the 61-year-old Swede would leave her post with immediate effect.

Marko Saloranta, the coach of the U17 juniors, will instead sit on the bench on an interim basis for the World Cup qualifiers against Ireland and Sweden in September. The goal is to qualify for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

Signeul has been the Finnish national team coach since 2017. Her contract would have expired at the end of the year and has now been terminated. At the European Championships in England, the Finns had all lost their three preliminary round games. The team finally lost 3-0 to Germany.
