Mid-term conclusion:
At the break it is 1-1 between Union Berlin and Wolfsburg. In the pouring rain, the Lower Saxony found the game much better and started like the fire brigade. The result was the early lead by Waldschmidt (5th), after which the irons then became increasingly awake. A standard situation then gave the Köpenickers their first chance, which Knoche promptly used to equalize (12′). Ultimately, however, the early goals remained a sham. Except for a crossbar hit by Siebatcheu (27th), there were no other noteworthy scenes in the penalty area. Recently, the Berliners withdrew a little after a very dominant phase, which meant that the match was completely balanced in the last few minutes before the break.

21:30
Shortly before the break tea, there are now many small fouls and nicknames. This brings a certain hectic pace to the game, which is currently characterized by constant interruptions.
42
21:28
Yellow card for Niko Gießelmann (1. FC Union Berlin)
Before the counterattack rolls, Gießelmann also kicks against Baku and catches the Wolfsburg player from behind on the foot. After the advantage of Khedira’s tactical foul was lost, the referee subsequently drew a yellow card against Gießelmann as well.
42
21:27
Yellow card for Rani Khedira (1. FC Union Berlin)
After Haberer loses the ball, the wolves can counterattack. Khedira has to stop Svanberg with a tactical foul. Clear yellow card.
42
21:27
Otávio grabs Seguin, which gives the Köpenickers a throw-in. Becker then crosses, but Haberer cannot control the ball at the second post.
40
21:25
Now the Irons give up their control again without need and retreat deep into their own half. The guests can not make a profit from it. When Gerhardt tries from the second row, the way to the goal is blocked.
37
21:23
Lower Saxony once again come to a cautious conclusion because the Köpenicker defend a little too erratically from a cross from the left and Otávio guard Juranović then also loses his shoe. Otávio is therefore able to shoot from ten meters on the left-hand side, but shoots the ball straight into the safe arms of Rønnow, who grabs it courageously.
36
21:22
There are still ten minutes to go in the first round, while the cup game, which was so fast-paced at the beginning, is increasingly flattening out. Lots of midfield banter and small-small on both sides.
33
21:19
The wolves are shifting their front pressing line forward and are now working a little better against the ball again, but without winning the ball in the dangerous area. That keeps the Köpenickers away from the Wolfsburg third and shifts the game more into the center.
30
21:15
Almost half an hour has passed and there is not much to see from the initial momentum of the Lower Saxony. Union Berlin is clearly dominating the game at the moment and sets the tone.
27
21:12
Lacroix tries to shield a high ball out of goal, but Haberer follows up vigorously and takes out the corner kick. Guilavogui first clears the high ball to the first post, but the Berliners fix the second ball and remain poisonous. Knoche served from the right baseline from Siebatcheu to the head, who hit the leather from six yards to the crossbar puts. Lucky for the Lower Saxony.
24
21:09
After a bad pass in the build-up game, Paulo Otávio can pick up the pace in the centre. However, Josip Juranović is there and separates the Wolfsburg player from the ball.
22
21:07
Knoche opens the game with a strong pass in depth to Becker, who starts on the left wing. However, Arnold intercepts his erratic cross into the backcourt.
20
21:05
Baku tests Pervan with a really sharp back pass that almost leads to a corner. However, the Casteels representative shines with a strong ball acceptance and can keep the ball on the baseline in play.
18
21:03
The Köpenicker are now clearly on the trigger and play cheerfully forward. After a Khedira cross from the right, the VfL defense wobbles several times, does not get the ball cleared at all, but can at least prevent the Irons from completing another goal.
15
21:00
Omar Marmoush gets the ball on the left wing and enters the box there. He tries to put the ball on his right foot against Danilho Doekhi, but loses the ball against the attentive defender. Strongly defended by the Dutchman.

20:57
Tooor for 1. FC Union Berlin, 1:1 by Robin Knoche
The capitals are now working on a corner kick, which promptly leads to a 1-1 equalisation. Josip Juranović takes a short corner kick, gets the ball back and then pulls the cross in sharply with his right towards the goal towards the second post. Robin Knoche runs in at the perfect moment, breaks away, gets the ball and skilfully pushes the ball over the line from less than three meters. Everything open again.
10
20:55
Now a high ball comes into Paul Seguin’s deep run, but Casteels representative Pavao Pervan is in full swing, comes out in time and intercepts the ball safely.
8th.
20:52
The goal is in the truest sense of the word the cold shower for the iron. With temperatures hovering around freezing, it’s raining cats and dogs over the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, where the hosts haven’t really settled into the game yet. Furthermore, only VfL plays.

20:50
Tooor for VfL Wolfsburg, 0: 1 by Luca Waldschmidt
The wolves set off like the fire brigade and crack low-lying Berliners early. After a cross from the right has actually already been defended, Arnold secures the second ball and puts it down for Gerhardt, who immediately pushes through to the completely free Waldschmidt. Meanwhile, Haberer cancels the offside, so that Waldschmidt is not in the forbidden zone and can deliberately shoot from nine meters. The left shot to make it 1-0 fits perfectly into the right corner. Nothing to do for Rønnow.
2.
20:46
With the first advance of the wolves, Knoche has to clear a dangerous cross directly to the corner. Arnold didn’t find a buyer with the dead ball on the first post before Gerhardt cleared the second ball.

The kick-off sounds in the stadium An der Alten Försterei. In the pouring rain, the Irons line up in their usual red and white home colors. The guests from Lower Saxony are dressed all in black. Here we go.

20:45
game start
20:25
Only nine competitive games have taken place between the two teams so far, with VfL Wolfsburg leading the direct comparison with five wins (two draws, two defeats). In the An der Alten Försterei stadium, the Wolves’ balance sheet is still absolutely expandable. The Wolves have not won any of their last four away games here and also suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Irons this season on September 18, 2022.
20:19
Niko Kovač, who incidentally won 21 of 22 DFB-Pokal games in his coaching career, reacted to his first competitive defeat since September with five changes to his starting line-up: Pavao Pervan takes over in goal for Koen Casteels, who is absent due to a cold. In addition, Omar Marmoush, Josuha Guilavogui, Luca Waldschmidt and Maxence Lacroix are preferred to Jonas Wind, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Patrick Wimmer (all three benches) and Jakub Kamiński (not in the squad).
20:13
VfL Wolfsburg already won the DFB Cup in the 2014/15 season. In the following seven seasons, however, the Lower Saxony only survived the round of 16 twice unscathed. A long series of successes ended at the weekend of all places. After eleven competitive games in a row without defeat (eight wins, three draws), Niko Kovač’s men lost 2-1 to SV Werder Bremen away from home.
20:07
The Köpenickers are not lacking in options even without Isco. Coach Urs Fischer can therefore keep an eye on the load control and rotate to four positions after the derby victory at Hertha. Paul Seguin, Josip Juranović, Niko Gießelmann and Jordan Siebatcheu are starting today for Kevin Behrens, Christopher Trimmel, Jérôme Roussillon (all three benches) and András Schäfer (foot injury).
19:59
In terms of sport, 1. FC Union Berlin still has a lot to offer in terms of quality. In the 2022/23 season, the Irons remained unbeaten in eight league games and one cup game at the An der Alten Försterei stadium (seven wins, two draws) and conceded just seven goals in total in these nine games.
19:52
With three wins from three competitive games in 2023, 1. FC Union Berlin drew back to within a point of FC Bayern Munich. Currently, the main topic in Köpenick is not the weekend’s victory, when the city derby at Hertha was won 2-0, but the failed Isco transfer. The 38-time Spanish international successfully completed the medical check with the Irons this morning. However, there was no signature.
19:45
Good evening and welcome from the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Here, 1. FC Union Berlin welcomes VfL Wolfsburg at 8:45 p.m. today in the DFB Cup Round of 16.
