football | Bundesliga: Who could follow Matarazzo at VfB?

Status: 10/11/2022 8:53 a.m

After the dismissal of Pellegrino Matarazzo, his assistant coach Michael Wimmer will probably take over. The first names are circulating as possible successors – with the usual suspects from the Bundesliga.

More than 1000 days Pellegrino Matarazzo was in office at VfB Stuttgart. In 100 competitive games he was responsible for the Swabians as head coach. But he doesn’t get another chance to prove himself with the Swabians who haven’t won this season. Matarazzo was relieved of his duties on Monday.

In preparation for the very important game against bottom VfL Bochum, Stuttgart will probably start with Michael Wimmer. Matarazzo’s assistant coach is to lead the units for the time being. The rescue should then succeed with another coach. The successor is not yet known. However, the names of some potential candidates who are currently without a club are already being discussed in the media.

Gerardo Seoane

The Swiss, who has just been released from Bayer Leverkusen, knows the Bundesliga. Seoane and the Werkself finished third last season with refreshing attacking football, but this season Leverkusen were unlucky under the 43-year-old. Before his time in Germany, Seoane was three champions and one cup winner in his home country with the BSC Young Boys from Bern.

Sebastian Hoeness

The 40-year-old has a big name and father Dieter Hoeneß has had a successful time with VfB. The former vice world champion scored 57 goals in 117 competitive games. Sebastian Hoeneß began his coaching career with FC Hertha 03 Zehlendorf’s youth team. This was followed by positions at RB Leipzig and FC Bayern Munich. He made his Bundesliga debut for TSG Hoffenheim. After 81 games, Hoeneß had to go at the end of June after missing the European Cup qualification.

Peter Bosz

The Dutchman was only released on Sunday at Olympique Lyon after 14 points from ten league games in France’s Ligue 1. Bosz also knows the Bundesliga from his years at Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Domenico Tedesco

The 37-year-old, who was released at RB Leipzig in September, has a past in Baden-Württemberg. He started at VfB in the youth department back in July 2008, back then as Thomas Schneider’s assistant. From 2013 he was assistant coach of the Stuttgart B-Jugend, later also head coach. In 2015 he moved to TSG Hoffenheim, where he was head coach of the youth team from 2016. Then Tedesco moved to professional football. He went from Hoffenheim to the then second division team Erzgebirge Aue and from there to Schalke 04, which he led to the Champions League. When he had to leave the Royal Blues, he moved from there to Spartak Moscow and then to Leipzig. He won the DFB Cup with RB this summer, but had to start the new season after the false start.

Adi Hütter

The Austrian has been without a club since the summer. He had to go after a poor season at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Hütter had previously trained Eintracht Frankfurt from 2018 to 2021 and had great success internationally. He reached the Europa League semi-finals and almost reached the Champions League.

Florian Kohfeldt

The 39-year-old was released from VfL Wolfsburg in mid-May, although he had managed to stay up with the Lower Saxony. Before his time with the Wolves, Kohfeldt was head coach at Werder Bremen from November 2017 to May 2021, having previously worked there in the youth division. Kohfeldt is also currently without a job.
