Kick-off 2nd half

Mid-term conclusion:

Union Berlin is 1-0 down against Borussia Mönchengladbach after 45 minutes and would not be able to regain the lead in the table as things stand. Shortly after the Irons shot the supposed 1-0, but the goal after Khedira’s shot was conceded by VAR due to a Becker handball (29th), Elvedi marked the Gladbach lead with a header (33rd). It’s okay, although Union was mostly field superior. The home side dominated the first few minutes and created the first opportunities of the game. But the bottom line was that Borussia had the better opportunities, Pléa with a direct free kick (24th) and Thuram’s individual action (35th) radiated danger. Schäfer had the best chance at Union, but failed in the 40th minute. In the second half, the Berliners have to develop more concrete goal threats from their own possession of the ball, see you soon!

45

16:17

Kramer gets another corner kick on the left baseline. Thuram comes to the header, but nods the ball to the right but wide of the goal.

45

16:17

Official stoppage time (minutes): 1

45

16:15

The West Germans have the ball on the right flank, but don’t push too hard on the opponent’s box. Is it 1-0 at the break?

43

16:14

Puchacz also brings in the corner kick. Again, Borussia clears in the back room, in which another Berliner comes to the shot. Schäfer’s volleyball hit weak and flies over the crossbar. It is noticeable that the Gladbachers have increasingly not occupied the back space well at corners.

42

16:13

Puchacz hits a free-kick cross from a long distance, which lands on an opponent’s head. In the second attempt, Ryerson wants to bring the game device into the center, Kramer deflects his head into the goal. Corner for the Iron.

40

16:11

Schäfer misses the equalizer! A flat cross from Sheraldo Becker, which was extremely unpleasant from a VfL point of view, slipped through five meters in front of the goal, and Schäfer slipped up to the second post. Bensebaini starts to slide and thus prevents Schäfer from shooting in.

38

16:10

Ryerson’s cross with the weak foot is cleared, a few seconds later a cross from the right wing flies into the box, but lands there at Tobias Sippel. The foals are now defensively better and more compact than at the beginning.

37

16:08

The capitals are now bringing in some calm and are trying to regain more possession of the ball.

35

16:07

Almost the 2:0! Thuram goes down to the left and runs left alone towards the Union gate. The Frenchman lifts the ball over the rushing Rønnow with his heel and has the empty goal in front of him from an acute angle, and Berlin defenders come rushing in. So Thuram places the self-imposed header in a high arc on the goal roof.

33

16:03

Nico Elvedi

Tooor for Bor. Mönchengladbach, 0:1 by Nico Elvedi

Shortly after the supposed Union leadership, the doorbell rang on the other side instead! Stindl brings a corner kick in from the right side. The leather sinks perfectly for Elvedi, who does not even have to jump against an unsorted Berlin defensive. The Swiss nods the ball into the right corner of the goal.

32

16:02

Pléa searches for N’Goumou with a high through ball. But Diogo Leite has the better position, doesn’t take any risks and heads the ball into his own goal.

29

16:00

Sheraldo Becker

VAR decision: The goal by S. Becker (1. FC Union Berlin) is disallowed, score: 0:0

The FCU leadership? No, the VAR steps in. Scally clears a cross from the right with his head into Rani Khedira’s feet. He drops the ball just in front of him and then takes off from the air. In the penalty area, Becker does not deflect offside. But the right elbow is on the ball – handball.

28

15:58

There is still a corner kick. Stindl crosses to Thuram, the Frenchman gets too little pressure behind his header. Easy prey for Rønnow.

27

15:58

Friedrich goes down to a straddle on the defensive and clears just before Becker. On the other hand, Thuram cannot use the immediate counterattack consistently enough.

25

15:56

The two following corner balls by the foals bring nothing. When Rønnow wants to hit the ball out of his hand, Thuram pokes the ball out of the air during the short flight phase. The situation is whistled off, but there is no yellow for the Gladbach striker.

24

15:55

The best chance so far: Pléa takes care of the matter and shoots sharply in the direction of the long corner. Well placed, but Rønnow has enough time in goalkeeping to pluck the ball out of the air.

23

15:53

Deep pass to Stindl, who has space and can open up. The VfL captain continues to push through to Thuram, who is put down and gets a promising free kick. The ball is slightly offset to the left about 25 meters from the goal.

22

15:52

The guests from the Lower Rhine lose the ball in the build-up, but Union is too hectic in the potential counterattack.

20

3:50 p.m

Not for the first time, however, Ryerson’s cross is a bit imprecise. The Norwegian Stand can still work on the crosses, otherwise he causes a lot of movement on the right side.

19

15:49

After Gladbach had a few ball relays in the meantime, the Unioners were superior to the field again in the last few minutes. Urs Fischer’s team now gets a free kick on the right flank.

17

15:47

Ryerson’s cross is a little too high for Haberer, Sippel catches the leather behind the opposing striker.

16

15:46

Haberer’s shots in the seventh and eighth minutes were the only two goal-area actions worth mentioning so far. The home side are currently looking for a gap in the Gladbach defensive network.

14

15:44

The Unioners do it briefly, Gladbach delivers quickly and the attack fizzles out.

13.

15:44

Skillful: Elvedi has his body in front of the ball, Jordan Siebatcheu pokes the ball out of the air against the Gladbach central defender and gets a corner kick.

12.

15:42

As on the entire Bundesliga weekend, the two teams will play in the capital at the end of October with almost summer temperatures of around 20 degrees.

10

15:40

For the first time, the Fohlenelf has a quieter phase and phases of possession of the ball. By the way, it’s Coach Daniel Farke’s birthday today, he’s 46 years old. Is there a suitable gift from his team?

8th.

15:39

In the resulting corner, Gladbach want header control in the penalty area and leave the backcourt open. This is exactly where the flank comes to Haberer. He tries a direct acceptance, but his volley is too weak and misplaced and therefore not a big challenge for Sippel.

7.

15:38

And that’s when the first cross slipped through: Ryerson found Haberer on the second post, who put the ball down with his chest and shot it from ten meters to the left. Scally blocks the shot into goal.

6.

15:37

Overall, the Irons are the game-determining team in the early minutes. They haven’t been able to convert that into scoring chances yet, but a few – still harmless – crosses have already flown into the penalty area.

5.

15:35

With a high Puchacz cross from the left, Schäfer extends his arm a little too much in a duel against Bensebaini – offensive foul.

4.

15:35

For Marvin Friedrich in the central defense of the guests it is the return to the old place of work. He is currently observing how Becker’s flank lands in the side netting.

2.

15:33

Doekhi’s cross ends up in the hands of Sippel, who continues to represent Gladbach’s number one Yann Sommer.

1.

15:31

Here we go! Union plays in red and white striped jerseys, Gladbach starts in green away outfits.

15:30

There is a change at Gladbach after the 1: 3 home defeat against Frankfurt: Youngster Nathan N’Goumou plays instead of Kouadio Koné, who was suspended with yellow card.

15:29

At Union Berlin, compared to the game against Braga, Puchacz is playing instead of Trimmel, and Schäfer also plays for Thorsby.

15:20

The direct comparison clearly speaks for the Köpenicker: Before promotion in 2019, there was only one competitive game, in the DFB Cup semifinals in 2001 Union prevailed on penalties. In the last three Bundesliga seasons, the Irons have only lost once – with two draws and three wins, two of them in the two duels last season.

15:12

Both clubs have scored 19 goals so far. For comparison: Union pursuers Bayern Munich snapped 38 times. The main difference: Union only conceded eight goals (league best), Gladbach 17. In October alone, the FCU did not concede a goal in six of eight competitive games. For Gladbach, the main thing is to break through the Union bulwark.

15:06

The last week was miserable for the eleven from the Lower Rhine and the mood suffered as a result. The surprising loss of the cup at SV Darmstadt (1:2) was followed by the next defeat against a Hessian team last Saturday: The in-form Frankfurt team won 3:1 in Gladbach. For the first time under coach Daniel Farke, Borussia lost two games in a row. The turnaround should take place today – with the championship leader of all places.

14:57

At Gladbacher Borussia the world seemed to be intact before last week. The hearty 1:5 bankruptcy in Bremen was quickly corrected, after a long dry spell they could call themselves derby winners again (5:2 against 1. FC Köln) and the bottom line was that the foals were satisfied with the start of the season.

14:51

The Unioners were able to ensure that this question did not arise on Thursday in the Europa League. The Bundesliga surprise team got off to a poor start in the Europa League with two 1-0 defeats. The result in the following three European Cup games was also 1:0, just in favor of the Irons – Berlin minimalism. The last of those three 1-0 wins came against Sporting Braga on Thursday.

14:40

Union Berlin celebrated five competitive games in a row in October, before VfL Bochum, the former bottom of the Bundesliga, inflicted a painful 2-1 away defeat on the leaders of the Bundesliga. Whether the bankruptcy at Bochum was just a slip or the end of the Köpenick high-flying heralds?

14:33

Union Berlin wants to regain the top of the table against Borussia Mönchengladbach. At 3:30 p.m. the whistle will be kicked off in the stadium at the Alte Försterei. So a warm welcome to the Bundesliga on Sunday!
