Thielmann’s preliminary work allows Modeste’s opening goal
After a balanced initial phase, Cologne took the lead in front of the 10,000 fans permitted under the Corona Protection Ordinance: Luca Kilian passed Jan Thielmann on the right, who played Nico Schlotterbeck and was thus able to pass the free-standing Anthony Modeste in front of the penalty area.
Modeste kicked the ball into the right corner with his right foot on the left side of the penalty area (23′). “You just have to allude to it, then you have a safe assist,” said Thielmann on Sky. Both teams no longer posed any great danger as the first half progressed.
Freiburg equalizer denied
“We made mistakes with the ball, lost the ball too much. It was better in the second half,” said Freiburg’s Christian Günter on Sky. Freiburg coach Christian Streich replaced Roland Sallai during the break, which seemed to pay off immediately. After a quick free kick, Sallai shot the ball into the goal from the right side of the penalty area (50′). However, Schlotterbeck was offside in the field of view of FC goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe, according to the pictures, referee Felix Brych recognized an active offside position and did not give the goal.
A little later Schlotterbeck saved on the line for his goalkeeper Mark Flekken when Cologne’s Florian Kainz had shot from eleven meters (57th). The game remained contested in the closing stages. Freiburg’s Günter failed with a shot from 22 meters at goalkeeper Schwäbe (73rd). Cologne’s Dejan Ljubicic and Ondrej Duda then missed the 2-0 (76th) with a double chance. Freiburg’s Nils Petersen shot over the goal in a direct acceptance (90+2).
