It was actually a beautiful afternoon in Cologne on Saturday (May 7th, 2022): The sun was shining in a bright blue sky, almost an entire city was rooting for 1. FC Köln and its fight for Europe. But somehow the players didn’t really know what to say 90 minutes later after the 1-0 draw against Wolfsburg.
Players hardly want to celebrate after defeat
After all, it wasn’t their own result that freaked out the fans. The parallel defeat of TSG Hoffenheim secured Cologne seventh place and thus international business. “I don’t even know how I feel. Today was completely unnecessary for us. But it’s nice that the fans can celebrate like this.”said Mark Uth, for example.
Captain Jonas Hector didn’t want to celebrate after the lost game with the completely euphoric supporters who had stormed the lawn in Müngersdorf. He was looking for the quickest way to the cabin. It just wasn’t the culmination of the strong season that we had imagined.
