‘Football a bit destroyed, 19,000 people behave’

RKC Waalwijk captain Michiel Kramer is disappointed that the match against FC Utrecht was halted twice on Saturday evening, because supporters of Utrecht threw cups on the field. “Football gets a little bit broken when we get this every time.”

According to the strict rules of the KNVB, a match is stopped if something is thrown on the field twice, but the mayor of Utrecht decided that the remaining two minutes would still be played on Saturday evening.

“We shouldn’t go too far,” says captain Kramer. “The whole rhythm is out of the game. We don’t want that. I’m also 34. It doesn’t make me any smoother if I have to go in every time.”

‘19,000 people behave well’
“What happens is not possible. There are 19,000 people who behave,” says Kramer.

FC Utrecht captain Nick Viergever is also disappointed by the situation. “A lot of people behave well. The rules are clear. Football is a fun outing, you have to have fun when you go to the stadium. Fans have to support us. This behavior is not part of that. There are some who ruin the rest.”

‘Decided together’
However, the players of the two teams decided not to continue playing football. The ball was only kicked off, after that the 22 players did nothing at all. RKC keeper Etienne Vaessen held the ball under his foot and the players watched it. “We thought it was neat to do it that way. We decided that together,” Kramer told ESPN .
