Then it’s half time in Duisburg. MSV was the much better team and was able to take a 2-0 lead thanks to two defenders. The lead could have been even higher due to the many counterattack opportunities. Verl never actually got into the final third, lost the ball too often and was disappointing. Alexander Ende therefore made the first change shortly before the break and Verl came out of nowhere to score. So now the game is exciting again. Verl is likely to do a lot of things differently in the second half – it remains to be seen whether the Zebras will start to wobble or continue to act alert and dangerous.

Verl’s goalkeeper Tim Wiesner surprisingly ended his career at the age of just 26 to concentrate on his studies. But a replacement followed at the same time: Verl signed Tom Müller from Preußen Münster. Coach Alexander Ende is spoiled for choice for the important game in Duisburg – because he has the entire squad at his disposal. Marcel Mehlem, a veteran, was signed during the international break – the 28-year-old has played 43 games in a league and gained international experience at Union Saint-Gilloise. However, the new addition is taking a seat on the bench today. Compared to the draw against Unterhaching, Tom Baack is in the starting line-up for Nicolás Sessa.

Meidericher’s best goalscorer this season is not a striker – but defender Sebastian Mai. From Zebra’s point of view, he should increase his quota of two goals today. Torsten Ziegner will still have to do without Niklas Kölle, who is in rehab after his shoulder operation, and Thomas Pledl, who also injured his shoulder in the defeat against TSV 1860 Munich. Kolja Pusch is out due to groin problems. Compared to the defeat in Regensburg, Knoll and Fleckstein are in the starting line-up for Bakir and Senger.

Things are not going well for the zebras this season. Coach Torsten Ziegner’s team is currently in 19th place and is therefore second to last in the table. During the international break they tested against Bundesliga team 1. FSV Mainz 05 and lost 2-0. The season hasn’t gone well for the guests from Verl either: four points from five games, which means 17th place in the table. The East Westphalia team qualified for the next one during the international break with a 2-0 win against upper division team TuS Bövinghausen Round of the Westphalia Cup.

The last meeting between the two teams on matchday 28 of last season was tough: the game ended 3-3. Alaa Bakir was the celebrated man for MSV, Duisburg had to play outnumbered for almost half due to Caspar Jander’s yellow-red card. At the end of the season both teams ended up in the middle of the table.
