Foot must be off the accelerator: if Drenthe wants to become the cycling province, motorists must hold back, says the Fietsersbond

Cycling is still too often a dangerous undertaking, says Gert Oostergetel from Rolde, spokesperson for the Fietsersbond Drenthe. For example, there are still roads where motorists are allowed to drive 80 kilometers per hour, without there being a separate bicycle path. There the speed should be a maximum of 60. As an example he mentions the Central Railroad between Nieuw-Balinge and the municipal border with Hoogeveen. “Worse, many drivers drive much faster than 80,” he notes. “Research has shown that 15 percent drive faster than 97.”
