Food waste: from consumers who are very attentive to the disillusioned

C.onsumers beware of waste, habitual but open to online shopping, little inclined to be tempted, when they shop, from greedy foods on display on the shelves.

This is the photograph of 47 percent of Italian consumers in the kitchen exit from an investigation of Adiconsum carried out together with Applia Italy (the association that brings together manufacturers of household appliances).

Food waste, confused Italians

However, precisely in the fight against waste, that 47 percent is still too little. Taking into account that even today, despite all the awareness campaigns, Approximately 65 kilos of food are wasted each year. Above all, there is a lack of awareness of the best way to reduce waste. In short, how to do it.

food waste

What should you really throw away?

In fact, for example, 80 percent of the interviewees know perfectly well that to waste food it has consequences for the environment. But 71% of these he does not know, however, when a food is still good or it must be thrown away.

In fact, there is a lack of knowledge to judge the state of conservation, thus ending up unnecessarily wasting. So much so that research has revealed that almost once in three, the decision to throw or not a food, it is blindly entrusted to the words “use preferably by”.

Food waste, the hedonistic consumer

In the survey, Adiconsum also places 29 percent of respondents in the category “Hedonistic consumer”, or the one who it wastes a lot because it always buys more than necessary, having the habit of going to the supermarket often and letting himself be tempted by new foods and packaging to try out to friends whom he often invites to dinner

According to Adiconsum, this is the typical consumer who needs to be supported to find the right balance between consumerism and critical consumption, learning the pleasure of making responsible choices for society but also for oneself and one’s budget.

The fridge, this stranger

The investigation also focused on the use of one of the most important tools for storing food: the fridge. Very little known tool, especially as regards its functioning.

In fact, 72.9 percent of respondents has no idea how to check the exact temperature of your fridge, a fundamental fact that helps you to understand if it is too full or opened too often.

Often, however, there is no way, because above all the older models do not have a thermometer that can be consulted quickly.

Food waste: the efficient consumer

The last two categories identified from the survey are, those who (18 percent) compare offers and buy in different supermarkets or shops according to the best price on the square, definitely the most promising in terms of awareness because they are the ones who do not waste.

And that really careless

And those who are fortunately few, only 5.5 percent according to the survey, are completely inattentive. Consumers to whom it doesn’t matter about the labels and even less about the differences between one product and another. So big waste, but above all because they are disillusioned and convinced that their choices have no impact.
