Jan Fonhof from Smilde will not take a seat in the House of Representatives if he is elected as a member of parliament for 50PLUS on Wednesday. Number 7 on the senior party’s candidate list announced this this afternoon. He withdraws as a candidate and cancels his party membership with effect from December 1.
The former party leader of 50PLUS Drenthe says he no longer wants to be a candidate MP. “The reason for this step is the fact that there continues to be rumblings within 50PLUS; constant arguments, especially on a personal level, and as a highlight the removal of a candidate MP by the police at the chaotic party conference of September 30,” he writes.
According to Fonhof, ‘affairs are now in the DNA of the party’. He indicates that he cannot and does not want to agree with this anymore.
Fonhof: “I have consciously waited to see whether and how stability could possibly return, but unfortunately little or nothing has emerged of this so far. After the incident at the AGM (general members meeting, ed.) in Ede, I have considered the party membership and my candidacy as a member of parliament. It was not a hasty decision.”
Based on the most recent polls, 50PLUS is still at risk of disappearing from Parliament. The party does not get further than 0 to 1 seats.
