Fire after collision
Two people died in the serious accident in Wijtschate, Heuvelland. A truck and van collided into each other, then the truck drove into the facade of a house. The two vehicles and three homes caught fire.
The driver of the van died at the scene. The driver of the truck suffered severe burns and later died in hospital.
“I do not have anything anymore”
The residents of the three houses are also inconsolable. “I literally have nothing left,” says one of the victims who had to watch yesterday how his home was completely destroyed by the fire. One house was completely destroyed, two others were heavily damaged.
Several local residents were taken care of in the Peace Village youth hostel in the neighboring municipality of Mesen. They received support from Victim Support. The municipality of Heuvelland provides emergency housing for the victims of the most heavily destroyed homes.
It is still unclear exactly how the accident happened. The public prosecutor of West Flanders has appointed an expert to investigate the circumstances.
