It was clear that something was coming: Within just two weeks, Florence + the Machine released three new singles with “King”, “Heaven Is Here” and “My Love”. Now it is certain: Yes, they will be part of a new album. DANCE FEVER, as it is titled, is scheduled for release on May 13, 2022.

Check out the new video for My Love, again directed by Autumn De Wilde and choreographed by Ryan Heffington:

DANCE FEVER was produced by Jack Antonoff, Dave Bayley (Glass Animals) and Florence Welch herself. The album was made during the ongoing corona pandemic. A focus of content should be on the so-called choreomania. Florence + the Machine say about their label: The term describes a phenomenon that occurred mainly in the late Middle Ages, in which large crowds – sometimes thousands – devoted themselves to the dance to the point of exhaustion, collapse or even death.

How do the new songs sound? Florence Welch describes it like this: Dance and folk elements are mixed with hints of Iggy Pop of the 70s, with wanderlust folk à la Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris – until a kind of “Nick Cave in the Club” emerged. In terms of content, she was inspired by “tragic heroines from the Pre-Raphaelite period”, but also “by dark gothic fiction texts (e.g. by Carmen Maria Machado, Julia Armfield) or by horror films such as “The Wicker Man”, “The Witch” and “Midsummer”. In their new songs, Welch plays “with questions of identity, with concepts of masculinity and femininity and themes such as redemption and celebration.”

The fourth album by Florence Welch and her band HIGH AS HOPE was released in 2018. On June 10th, Florence + the Machine will headline the new Tempelhof Sounds festival in Berlin.
