Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is probably one of the most anticipated blockbusters this summer. A new rumor about the biopic could pique some viewers’ curiosity even more than the electrifying trailer already did. Because the main actors Florence Pugh (“Midsommar”) and Cillian Murphy (“Sunshine”) are said to be seen naked for a longer sex scene. Speculation arose after the film received an “R” rating for “sexual content and nudity” in the US.
Christopher Nolan’s first “R” rating in twenty years
The biographical thriller “Oppenheimer” tells the story of the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb”. During World War II, he worked with other scientists, including Albert Einstein, on the so-called “Manhattan Project,” which led to the development of the first atomic bomb.
Privately, Oppenheimer was married to Kitty Harrison, played by Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place”) in the film, and had two children with her. However, the physicist had an extramarital affair with psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, played by Pugh, whom he met before his wife did. Oppenheimer and Tatlock’s tumultuous relationship is considered to be defining in the scientist’s life, so it’s not too surprising that Nolan will pay attention to it as well. Normally, sex and love are less of a focus for the US-British director, who is better known for his opulent productions and well thought-out action scenes.
It seems he’s going to make an exception in Oppenheimer, though, if US ratings are to be believed. An “R” rating for the summer blockbuster would be the first for a Nolan film since 2002, when his thriller “Insomnia,” starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, received that rating.
“Oppenheimer” starts in German cinemas on July 20th. In addition to Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Florence Pough, Matthias Schweighöfer will also be seen as Werner Heisenberg, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and many other stars in the strip.
