It goes unbelievably well with the eye of Floor (16) from Tilburg. In July, strangers threw an egg to his eye, potentially leaving him blind on one side. “At the last check-up, the ophthalmologist was surprised at his recovery,” says mother Chantal. “He still has some problems but they will disappear completely.”
Floor cycled back at the end of July after a visit to the Tilburg fair. An egg was thrown out of nowhere from an oncoming moped. “That hit his eye. I initially thought it would be okay, because how hard can an egg be? We went to an ophthalmologist who told me that with some bad luck he would never see through that eye again.”
“It’s going to be all right with the damage to the eye.”
Floor’s world collapsed at that moment. His future suddenly became uncertain. He wanted to go to the police academy, but you will not be accepted there if you are blind in one eye.
At the time, the ophthalmologist hoped that the damage would be limited to poorer vision or some blurred vision. “At the last check-up, the ophthalmologist told me that the eye will be all right,” says Chantal. “It’s unbelievable what a regenerative capacity a young body has,” said the doctor.
“He sees fine straight ahead, sideways it’s still blurry.”
At the moment Floor still has some limitations in his left eye. “He sees fine straight ahead,” Chantal says, “but it’s still blurry to the side.” Even if it would remain with this residual damage, Floor can live with that. “If this is all”, he said relieved to his mother recently. “But what a bad holiday I’ve had,” he added.
Chantal now understands that an egg can cause so much damage to an eye. “Eggs but also golf balls are just small enough to fill an eye. A football and even a hockey ball is still slowed down by the eye socket, which protects the eye, I heard from the ophthalmologist.”
Police are still investigating the perpetrators. CCTV footage has been requested and a neighborhood survey has been conducted.
