The water reaches the banks, the wells along the streets are full: the high water is visible and noticeable in Drenthe.
The water boards are busy pumping away the excess water. For example, the Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board reports that about a hundred volunteers exchanged their Christmas breakfast for a dike inspection. “Our employees are working throughout the entire work area.”
According to the Union of Water Boards, the umbrella organization of the 21 water boards in the Netherlands, the situation is being closely monitored. A spokesperson speaks to the ANP of ‘a challenge’, because the soil is saturated due to the heavy rainfall. “The sponge is completely engorged.”
