SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a clear home win against Vojvodina Novi Sad in the Handball European League on Tuesday and has reached the knockout round early. Just like TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, which lost against Rhein-Neckar Löwen.

Flensburg beat the Serbian representative on the penultimate matchday of the main round with 42:30 (20:16) and remains the leader of Group 3 with 8:2 points. “All in all, a successful performance from us,” said Johannes Golla to NDR. “Mentally it was a difficult challenge.”

On March 5th, the SG could even afford a defeat by up to nine goals at Bjerringbro-Silkeborg in Denmark in order to move straight into the quarter-finals as group winners.

“Stretch” thanks to Nantes already through

Meanwhile, the “Recken” also lost the second game against their Bundesliga rivals. A week after the 26:27 at Mannheim, the Lower Saxony team lost out in their own hall with 24:32 (13:15). But since the French club HBC Nantes won 31:22 (16:12) at Gornik Zabrze in Poland and qualified early for the quarter-finals as winners of Group 1, it is already clear that the Lions will finish second and Hannover third Enter the knockout phase.

Shaky initial phase of the SG

Flensburg had to survive a somewhat shaky opening phase against the Serbs, in which left winger Pedersen missed two seven-meter throws. Only then did the Schleswig-Holstein team get into their tempo game. In the 13th minute, Teitur Einarsson took the SG’s first five-goal lead with a score of 10:5. However, the hosts showed some deficiencies in defense and in exploiting opportunities. Guest keeper Fran Lucin ended up making twelve saves.

Golla makes the decision

The Serbs, who were missing former Flensburg player Petar Djordjic, had no real chance of winning. With 31:21 (44th), SG captain Johannes Golla made the decision. In the final phase, Flensburg’s coach Nicolej Krickau also gave the two 18-year-old young players Oskar Czertowicz and Arv Kinsky playing time. Both scored two goals each.

Hanover-Burgdorf despairs of Späth

TSV Hannover-Burgdorf got into the game well against the Lions, scoring 5:3 (11th) and 7:4 (14th). But the guests didn’t let themselves be left behind and took the lead again thanks to Niclas Kirkelökke’s goal to make it 9:8 (20th). Great support was once again provided by goalkeeper David Späth, who had 23 saves to his name at the end of the game and also excelled as a goalscorer.

Hannover was too harmless throughout the game to endanger Mannheim’s victory. The best throwers of the game were Jonathan Edvardsson and Marius Steinhauser with five goals each for Hannover and Tobias Reichmann and Kirkelökke with nine goals each for the Lions.
