“Flemish government must do more with solar energy” | Inland

Groen wants the Flemish government to step up its game when it comes to solar energy. “If every roof that is suitable for it were full of solar panels, the share of solar energy would skyrocket,” says Groen MP Staf Aerts, who argues, among other things, for more solar panels on government buildings.

The roofs of government buildings together form hundreds of square kilometers of surface on which to install solar panels, says Groen. But they often remain empty today. According to the 2020 Solar Plan, solar panels on Flemish government roofs would have a total potential of 144 megawatts.

In a recent answer from Minister Demir, the minister talks about other figures, which show that the Jambon government does not yet have reliable figures about the potential of its roofs, Aerts says. “In their own words, ‘that exercise is still being started’. There is also no information available about the announced objectives that the government promised to set itself, which suggests that they have not yet been set.” The party therefore thinks it is high time that the Jambon government “works on a solar sprint and does everything it can to increase the amount of solar energy and reduce the bills”, says Aerts.

He also points out that 92 percent of the potential on private roofs remains untapped. According to the Greens, the Jambon government must also step up there. They argue, among other things, for a system of pre-financing for people with a small wallet. Flemish people who do not have a suitable roof for solar panels or who live in an apartment building, for example, should be able to benefit from solar sharing: a system in which energy is generated and distributed together in a community.

“Cheaper energy is available, which proves solar record after solar record. But as long as the Jambon government does not deploy a solar sprint, that potential will remain unused and bills will remain high. That is a missed opportunity for our energy bills and for the climate,” said Staf Aerts. .
