There is a practical reason why the author of the film is nominated for 3 Oscars and 2 Bafta chooses animation to tell a true story and is to safeguard the anonymity of its protagonistknown as a child at school, and his secret.

Amin and Kasper in

Amin and Kasper in “Flee”.

But there is also a reason that is all inside the cinema and it is the ability that pencil strokes and color palettes can prove to be conducive to digging into memory.
This is what Amin does, right from the first sequence lying on a psychoanalyst’s bed (but the dialogue is always with the friend-filmmaker).

The reconstruction of the escape from Kabul in the late 1980s, the arrival in St. Petersburg just when the USSR was collapsing, the family separated and finally the arrival in Denmark and the beginning of a new life, is a tragic parable shared by multitudes.

Yet Flee gives us back the uniqueness of a painful uprooting with the power of a melodrama of the past.
