Fix: Niklas Süle opts for BVB – 8th transfer from FC Bayern

“The new club is set. “We are pleased that we were able to sign a German national player in Niklas Süle and retain him for four years,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. Sebastian Kehl added: “Niklas showed us in personal talks that he is very interested in Borussia Dortmund. He has a lot of experience, calmness in the build-up game and the necessary physique to take the next step with us from the summer.” Süle is the 13th transfer between the record champions and the black and yellow and the eighth professional who takes the route from Munich to the Ruhr area.

At 35 million euros, the central defender is one of the most valuable players who can be had on a free transfer after the season – never before had BVB signed a professional with a higher market value for free. Thomas Meunier (30), who came from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, has been at the top so far with 24 million euros, after which there is a big gap to second place.

The reason given for leaving FC Bayern was the lack of appreciation for the club. The longtime Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had described this as “a unit called the euro” and thus alluded to the high salary demands of the defender. According to “Bild”, Süle declined an annual salary of 10 million euros. With this sum he would be one of the top earners in Dortmund, on a par with Mats Hummels (33) and behind Marco Reus (32; 12 million euros a year).

Süle switched from TSG Hoffenheim to the Isar in the summer of 2017 for €20m and, with the exception of a few injuries, including a cruciate ligament rupture in the 2019/20 season, was always part of the permanent staff. In 159 games he scored six goals, assisted four and won 13 titles.
