He completed his first training session on Thursday, and now the “Magpies” have officially confirmed the commitment of goalkeeper Loris Karius, who has been without a club since July: The 29-year-old has signed a contract with Newcastle United until January with the option of an extension until the end of the season, he should replace the substitute keeper Karl Darlow (31), who is currently injured in the ankle. “It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be a part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision,” Karius said.
For him, Newcastle is his fifth professional stop since 2011. At Liverpool, where the German was under contract between 2016 and 2022, he has not played a role for a long time, was at Besiktas (2018 to 2020) and Union Berlin (2020/ 21) awarded. Karius had his last professional assignment for the “Eisernen” in February 2021, he played a total of four times in the Bundesliga for the club from Köpenick, but was unable to assert himself in the competition with Andreas Luthe.
“There are inquiries, we’ve already spoken, but for me the club wasn’t there yet,” said Karius in an interview with the TV channel “Sky” at the beginning of August about his search for a new challenge. “It’s a situation I haven’t had before. To be free, to be able to choose the club freely. This is not all just negative, it also brings beautiful things with it. I see it as an opportunity and a fresh start. This time I’m making the decision very carefully and deliberately giving myself more time to find the right club.”
Liverpool, who signed the keeper in 2016 for around 6.2 million euros from FSV Mainz 05, reservist Karius had already suggested a change in the last winter transfer window, but could not find a suitable buyer. The goalkeeper’s market value, which peaked at €12m in 2018, had recently fallen to €1.5m – the lowest since 2014.
