Fix: Max Eberl becomes sports director at RB Leipzig – Gladbach contract dissolved

Contract with Gladbach dissolved

RB Leipzig reports completion: Max Eberl becomes the new sporting director at the Saxons and takes up his duties on December 15. The 48-year-old has been given a long-term contract, reportedly until 2026. Eberl actually had a contract for the same term with his long-term employer Borussia Mönchengladbach. The “foals” announced that they had canceled the current contract at Eberl’s request so that the manager could hire in Leipzig. According to the “Bild”, RB will pay a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros for Eberl, which can increase depending on sporting success – at least one million euros in bonuses is likely.

Leipzig’s CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said: “With Max Eberl, we were able to fill the position of Managing Director Sport with our absolute dream candidate. We have been dealing with Max for a long time, but have always respected his difficult situation and are now very happy to be able to start working together in December.”

Mintzlaff explained that he had contacted Eberl early on – who, exhausted, had given up his post at Gladbach in January. A meeting between the two followed in the summer. “Here, Max confirmed to me that he finds the perspective with us very interesting, but does not want to come back before July 1, 2023. But that left the door a bit wide open for us and we are now very happy that together with Max we found the starting point of our cooperation for mid-December,” said Mintzlaff, who described Eberl as an “absolute football expert”.

The Leipzig club boss explained: “It was certainly a relatively long time before we were able to fill this position of sports director, which had been vacant for almost a year and a half. But it was always important to us to get an absolute top man who can develop RB Leipzig in the long term and take it to the next level – we found exactly this strong man in Max Eberl and were able to inspire us.” Most recently, Markus Krösche, now at Eintracht Frankfurt, the post of sports director, his engagement ended in the summer of 2021. After joining Leipzig, Eberl will move directly into the management.

Both clubs made it a point to emphasize the positive negotiations for a solution at Eberl. “In good and fair talks we reached an agreement with RB Leipzig that corresponds to our ideas,” said Gladbach’s managing director Stephan Schippers.

Max Eberl sees huge potential at RB Leipzig

Eberl, who had been critical of the RB Leipzig construct in the past, said via club announcement: “I am very happy that we can now announce my move to RB Leipzig today. I’m grateful for the time I needed to recover and I feel ready and full of energy again to want to work in football. I’m coming to a club that has developed rapidly in recent years, is very ambitious and has a clear football philosophy. There is huge potential here – in the entire club and in the entire region.”

Eberl continued: “Using and developing this potential is an incredibly attractive task for me. Likewise, the trusting conversations over the last few weeks with RB Leipzig about Oliver Mintzlaff and the associated appreciation, also to the effect that the club respects my break until after the World Cup, have made it clear to me that I want to take on exactly this task -Pro once again on coach Marco Rose, with whom he had already worked in Gladbach.
