Fix: Emery to become Aston Villa’s new head coach – taking office November 1st

opt-out clause activated

The search for a coach at the English first division team Aston Villa came to an end a few days after Steven Gerrard was fired: The Spaniard Unai Emery will succeed the 42-year-old on November 1st, the Premier League club announced on Monday evening. The formalities of the work permit still have to be clarified in advance.

The Villans reportedly activated the €6m release clause in the 50-year-old’s contract with Villarreal, which runs until 2023. Emery returns to the English top flight with the experience of 51 PL games, where he had already stood on the sidelines for Arsenal between July 2018 and November 2019 (points average in the league 1.73 points). The coach had led the Gunners to the Europa League final in 2019, and two years later he won the competition with the Submarinos Amarillos. He did the same three times in a row with Sevilla FC between 2013 and 2016. During his two-year tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, Emery also won seven national titles between 2016 and 2018.

With Villarreal, Emery has twice reached 7th place in LaLiga since taking office in 2020, which the team has also occupied in the current season after eleven completed matchdays. In the 2021/22 Champions League, the club only failed in the semi-finals at Liverpool FC, after previously eliminating FC Bayern in the round of 8.
