Fix: Alessandro Schöpf signs with Vancouver Whitecaps FC

After the end of the contract in Bielefeld

Alessandro Schöpf moves to Major League Soccer. The 28-year-old signed with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday until 2024 with an option for a further year. A fee will not be due for the MLS club after the end of the central midfielder’s contract with Arminia Bielefeld.

With the Whitecaps, Axel Schuster, an old companion who Schöpf knows from their days together at FC Schalke 04, works as sports director. The Austrian international left the Royal Blues for Arminia last summer, where he made 33 appearances in all competitions, in which he contributed one goal and three assists. With the East Westphalians, his market value jumped from 1.5 to currently 2.5 million euros, making him the most valuable non-club Austrian after Florian Grillitsch (26).

Schuster on the new signing: “Alessandro is a player that we have had our eyes on for a while. He’s a versatile midfielder with an incredible engine, covers a lot of space and is good at passing. He also has a lot of experience in some of the best competitions in world football.” Schöpf added: “Coming from European football to North America is a big step for me. I hope to bring a lot of success to Vancouver and look forward to seeing all the fans at BC Place.”
