Beatboxers, BMXers, street art artists and breakdancers. Rotterdam South is bursting with talent and initiatives in the field of street culture in September. During the Summer in South can you enjoy all that creativity this month.
The program is packed with diversity, ranging from fashion, food, music and theater to art and sports. No less than five street culture festivals are part of Summer op Zuid in September: Rotterdam Street Culture Week, ALL CAPS, Kijk Je Kop Comedyshow, Helderheid Festival and MOTION Theater Festival. These events prove that street culture in Rotterdam has reached its full potential.
Street sports at a high level during the Rotterdam Street Culture Week
Rajiv Bhagwanbali, the organizer of the Rotterdam Street Culture Week, emphasizes that Rotterdam is one of the most diverse cities in the Netherlands. This has enabled street culture to develop at a high level. “The street is the place where this diversity of people comes together. In street culture, differences between people are celebrated and the background of the creators is greatly respected.”

The Rotterdam Street Culture Week will descend on South from Friday 8 to Sunday 17 September. At various locations you can enjoy a varied mix of top sport, music and dance. From basketball to beatboxing, from the World Cup Panna KO to bubbling battles and from the NK BMX to the Perfect Beat Challenge.
Top players brighten up Feijenoord with murals during ALL CAPS
During the day ALL CAPS the world top in street art will provide the Feijenoord district with no less than eleven new ‘murals’ during the weekend of 8 to 10 September. Come and see how the British artist Sophie Mess, the Portuguese Jorge Charrua and the R75 (Ricardo van Zwol) from Rotterdam embellish the public space with high-quality art. You can participate in one of the tours along the works of art.

Watch your head improvise like crazy
Improvisation talents from South Rotterdam compete against each other during Kijk je Kop, where current topics are packaged with humor in improvisation theatre. Expect jokes about everyday things that almost everyone has to deal with: the pressures of social media, drug use and relationship problems.
Compete for the Clarity Cup
The Brightness Festival is a rap, hip-hop and spoken word festival that revolves around the annual Clarity Cup on Saturday 9 September. That cup is named after the young deceased Rotterdam rapper Helderheid who wanted to positively influence his neighborhood with music.
MOTION stretches the term ‘theatre’ and gives makers space
The theater festival MOTION puts new (theatre) makers in the spotlight. From music, spoken word, dance, traditional text theatre, amapiano music, crossovers from hip hop to classical music. During MOTION, makers meet each other, learn from each other and present their work from 22 and 23 September to a curious audience.
Come to Rotterdam in the weekend of 8, 9 and 10 September for performances by rapper Hef, local talent Cor and DJ Chuckie, among others, and experience the best of street culture during the Zomer op Zuid.
