Five emerging talents from New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week kicks off this week, and like every season, there are a number of new and emerging talents turning heads. Some of the brands have so far sold their fashion primarily via the Internet, while others are now also represented in retail stores. Here’s our roundup of five labels to keep an eye on for Spring/Summer ’24.

Advice

Advisory FW23 Image: Spotlight Launchmetrics

On Sunday, Advisry will make its womenswear debut on the official New York Fashion Week calendar. The community-focused brand was founded by 23-year-old Brooklyn native Keith Herron and inspired by his love of film, graphics and Americana.

  • Bestseller: Signature knitwear with the ADV logo
  • Price point: Graphic hoodies retail for $150, knitwear for $325, and the brand’s bags start at $238.
  • Distribution: The brand showcases its collections on its website and in pop-ups and sells them at BlackFashionFair.org and at ComplexCon, the California event where pop culture, art and music come together.
  • Current projects: A collaboration with the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat for the “Conveyer Belt of Life” collection. This summer, Advisry launched its first handbag, a shape inspired by the timeless appeal of vintage cameras

Fforme

Known for its shiny fabrics and the currently ubiquitous “quiet luxury” aesthetic, Fforme will unveil its latest collection on Sunday at 12 p.m. Designed by designer Paul Helbers, who has worked under Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton and The Row, the architectural yet sophisticated shapes combine commerce and design in a desirable neutral color palette.

Grace Ling

New York-based Singaporean Grace Ling trained with Thom Browne and The Row before launching her subversive and playful brand in 2020. On September 8th, she will make her NYFW debut.

Chan Chit Lo

Founded in 2019 by designer Venus Lo, the brand Chan Chit Lo takes the premise “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to a luxurious level. At New York Fashion Week, she’s hosting a two-day showcase focused on handmade knitwear.

  • Current projects: The 2022 Yu Prize finalist has expanded her product range and is now launching a homewear collection made from recycled leather.

Sho Konishi

The eponymous label of Japanese-born, New York-based fashion and costume designer Sho Konishi debuts at NYFW on September 13th. Founded in 2019, his brand has been worn by celebrities such as Saweetie, Chloe X Halle and Lizzo.

  • Price point: Clothing and accessories range from $40 for flip flops to $2,500 for custom designs.
  • Distribution: Your own online shop
  • Current projects: Participated in the Fall/Winter 23 runway show for the Japanese label Khoki in Tokyo and designed the outfits for the musical actors at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics as well as the costumes for the musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo in October premieres.
