It is not yet clear what exactly happened. Police said around 6 p.m. that a shooting was underway and asked residents near the Neuse River Greenway park in the east of the city to stay indoors. Witnesses told local media that the suspect was young and dressed in camouflage clothing and black boots. A local resident described the weapon to reporters from WRAL as a shotgun.
Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin spoke in a press conference about a tragic day for the city. “We must stop this senseless violence in America. We must tackle gun violence. There is still a lot to do, but tonight we have a lot to mourn,” she said.
