Fitbit warns against continued use of its “Ionic” fitness watch. Overheating of the battery can cause burns. Owners of the device should therefore contact customer service.
The manufacturer Fitbit, which belongs to Google and is known for its sports bracelets and fitness trackers, is currently recalling almost 1.7 million smartwatches of the “Ionic” model worldwide. According to Fitbit, the company has received reports of injuries due to battery overheating. Fitbit therefore advises owners of the Ionic to stop using the watch and not to wear it any longer.
Fitbit Ionic Recall – Customers Receive Refunds
According to the US consumer protection CPSC, the majority of the recall is attributable to the US market with around one million smartwatches. According to the agency, there have been 118 reports of burn injuries from overheated batteries worldwide – including second and third degree injuries. Fitbit has therefore decided to voluntarily recall the devices and emphasizes that other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers are not affected by the problem.

The Fitbit Ionic has been on the market in Germany since 2017. Here, however, it was sold in smaller numbers. However, Fitbit stopped producing the smartwatch in 2020. It has not been available in German stores for some time.
On a specially set up website the company is currently notifying its customers of the recall and is offering affected customers a refund and a special discount on select Fitbit devices, bands and services. For this, customers have to register on a separate page.
