Fishing competition in Heemskerk for kids and parents successful for the fourth time

Competing against other children in a fishing competition with your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother: It has been happening in Heemskerk for years and today the fourth edition was on the agenda. Fishing club Het Snoekje is happy that they can organize this for the local youth.

Meanwhile, it has become a bit of a tradition for children to compete with their parents, grandfather, grandmother or even neighbor during this fishing competition. The enthusiastic fish master Theo Willemse is pleased that the initiative is so well received. “I also hope it will stay that way for a very long time!”

According to the fish master, the idea arose from the way children brag to each other about their parents and their fishing skills. “The children always say, ‘My father catches bigger fish than your father!’ Then I just say show it, take your father with you.”

A little boy who is sitting on the quay at the Weverskwartier with his father tells what he thinks of the match. “Nice! I already came second once and I liked it then too. Just going outside with my father is also fun.”

According to Willemse, the match really has a neighborhood function. “So we connect the parents with the children. We try to promote that the children are outside and so are the parents.”

Michel Zwaga from the community center provides coffee, tea and lemonade with his cargo bike. He confirms that the fishing competition really does something for the neighborhood. “It is the connection, the conviviality and to get to know each other better. Also to promote the quality of life.”

One of the fathers along the waterfront is happy to share this afternoon with his son. “I kind of infect him with it and he likes it, that’s the main thing.”

The fishing competition is open to everyone and for children who do not have their own fishing rod, fishing club Het Snoekje fortunately has one on loan. “We pay this entirely out of our own pocket and say: come and fish for free, don’t worry!”
