Fishermen in Cambodia caught a 300kg stingray last week. According to biologists, it is the largest fish ever caught in freshwater.
By: NU.nlThe 4-meter-long ray was caught on Koh Preah, an island in northern Cambodia on the Mekong River. It originates in Tibet and runs through China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam almost 5,000 kilometers further into the South China Sea.
It took twelve people to land the huge fish. The animal was nicknamed ‘Boramy’ (‘Full moon’ in Khmer, the language of Cambodia). After scientists inserted an electronic chip, she was released back into the river. The chip allows researchers to track her movements and behaviour.
“This is very exciting because it is the largest fish in the world,” said a biologist involved in the project to keep the Mekong River clean. “It’s very hopeful to see such a large fish live healthy and well in the Mekong.”
The previous record for the largest fish caught was held by a 293 kilogram catfish. It was caught in Thailand in 2005.
