First victory for Nikki Haley in Republican primary election is in | Abroad

Presidential candidate Nikki Haley won the Republican primaries in the American capital Washington on Sunday. The Republican party in Washington DC has announced this. It is Haley’s first victory against former President Donald Trump.

Haley won 62.9 percent of the vote, compared to Trump’s 33.2 percent. For Haley it is mainly a symbolic success. The chance remains very small that she will win the Republican nomination to compete against the dead Democratic candidate Joe Biden in November. Trump won the first eight elections by significant margins.

The win gives her 19 delegates to the Republican national convention in July. It will take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in mid-July. 2,429 delegates meet there. To win, a candidate must gather at least 1,215 delegates.

Trump has already won 244 delegates in recent weeks, Haley only 24. Since Washington’s capital region has only 19 delegates, Haley’s victory does little to change the balance of power.

Washington is considered a stronghold of the anti-Trump camp; supporters of the ex-president, who are more likely to live in rural areas and have less education, are clearly underrepresented.
