The Ukrainian soldiers are volunteers with no military experience. Their short training is based on basic training for British soldiers and includes lessons on weapons handling, combat first aid, patrol techniques and war law. The British can train up to 10,000 Ukrainians every 120 days.
The United Kingdom also launched a training program for Ukrainian soldiers in 2015 in response to Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula. More than 22,000 soldiers have completed the program. That ended when the war in Ukraine began on February 24. Up to 200 Ukrainian soldiers now die every day.
