First legal weed sold in Breda: ‘Historic day’

The time had finally come, the first legal weed was sold on Friday morning in coffee shop De Baron in Breda. Minister Ernst Kuipers of Health was allowed to open the first box of cannabis. He spoke of a historic day.

Early in the morning, a security transport arrived in Breda containing the first legally grown cannabis. Producer ‘Earthly’ provided the first dose.

Minister Kuipers speaks of a historic day: “A day that we have been talking about for a very long time. This is extremely important from a public health perspective alone. We are curious about what this will do to all kinds of public health aspects, such as the use and purity of a product. and the prevention of pollution.”

Tilburg and Breda are the first with this cannabis test that allows coffee shops to legally purchase and sell. This makes the entire system legal. The first box was opened under the watchful eye of mayors Theo Weterings (Tilburg) and Paul Depla (Breda).

“As long as the quality is good, people will really choose it.”

Depla is happy that the time has finally come: “It is a special and historic day. We have been looking forward to this for a long time, since 2012. We not only had to ensure that it could be legally sold, but also legally grown. should not be grown by criminals.”

In Breda, all eight coffee shops are immediately participating in the cannabis test. They are given six months in which, in addition to legal weed, old weed can also be sold. Depla: “But I assume that people will choose the weed that they know how it was grown. As long as the quality is good, then people will really choose that.”

“We have allowed the underworld into the coffee shop for far too long.”

Weterings hopes that the government will soon switch to legal cannabis throughout the country. “We have allowed the underworld to enter the coffee shop for far too long. All the illegally earned capital has led to the development of all kinds of other crimes, such as hard drugs. That is why the government must speed up the legalization of soft drugs.”

As of today, six of the eleven coffee shops in Tilburg are participating. Some are still in the process of making the switch. Weterings: “A number of others try to do it before or after January 1. There is quite a lot of extra work, such as the administration.”

Ten growers have received a permit from the government to grow legal cannabis. This applies, among other things, to the company Fyta in Waalwijk. Ultimately, they deliver nationally to coffee shops in eleven different municipalities.

For consumers – smokers – there is something to choose from. Fyta has 42 flavors of weed on offer. From now on, this must be done with a label that contains all information about, for example, the active substance content. But also the harvest date and the packaging date.

Consumers don’t have to worry about the price, says Depla: “The prices of legal weed are fine compared to illegal weed.”
