First Division 1980/81 in TM database: Aston Villa celebrates championship title

… better and better!

The 1980/81 season of the English First Division is now available in full in the Transfermarkt database. After a 70-year wait, the Championship Cup went to Aston Villa for the first time since the 1909/10 season, who won their seventh and to date last English title. The team from Birmingham fought a close duel with Ipswich Town for a long time, but four game days before the end the “Villans” took over the top of the table and never let them go.

What is unique is the fact that coach Ron Saunders only used 14 players in the 42 games this season in the league. The attacking trio consisting of Peter Withe (20 goals), the later Austria Klagenfurt legionnaire Gary Shaw (18 goals) and Tony Morley (10 goals) was outstanding. The top scorers were shared by Withe and Steve Archibald from Tottenham. The “Spurs” also won their sixth FA Cup victory that season; in the final replay, the team from London defeated Manchester City 3-2 at Wembley Stadium.

Ipswich had to beat Aston Villa in the league, but there was a title to celebrate on the European stage. The traditional club won the UEFA Cup against AZ Alkmaar and won the first European cup in its 145-year club history. Last year’s champion Liverpool FC ran out of steam towards the end of the championship, but coach Bob Paisley’s team triumphed in the European Cup final against Real Madrid in the Parc des Princes in Paris.
