First city gates placed, Monnickendam is looking forward to celebrating the Battle of the Zuiderzee

A large scaffolding with the clear contours of a city gate: it is a mighty sight that no one can miss when entering Monnickendam. In July, the inhabitants celebrate that it is 450 years ago that the Sea Beggars won against the Spaniards at the Battle of the Zuiderzee. In the coming weeks, the volunteers of the construction work group will be working hard on placing more set pieces.

Foreman Muus de Groot is in the spotlight in front of the Grote Kerk. He enjoys visibly when he sees the activities of the volunteers. “We designed and thought out the entire roof construction in advance. Fortunately, it was finished on time,” he says. “The scaffolding of the city gates was installed yesterday and now they are placing the roof on the scaffolding.”

There will be a total of three large city gates and one small one in Monnickendam. Cees Beets is convinced that they will all be ready on time: “That’s not a question, it just happens!”

Today the Noordeindepoort and the Broeckerpoort were placed. The Zuideindepoort and a gate on the fortress will be built in the workshop and set up in mid-June.
