In all probability, the German national soccer team will have to do without striker Lea Schüller in the top game against Spain on Tuesday. The attacker had a positive corona test, as the German Football Association announced on Monday.
Lea Schüller’s Corona case is not the first at the European Championships in England, but the first in the German team. According to the DFB, the 24-year-old attacker from Bayern Munich, who scored a goal in the 4-0 win over Denmark in the first game, only had mild symptoms. She was immediately isolated from the rest of the squad at team headquarters in London. Whether and when she can return to the team will be decided “depending on the course of events in accordance with the medical requirements and in close consultation with UEFA,” the statement said. A game in the game on Tuesday (12.07.22 / 9 p.m. CEST / live on the first and on sportschau.de) against Spain seems – as of now – more than questionable. She could be replaced up front by captain Alexandra Popp, who was only a substitute at the start against Denmark.
UEFA rules state that a team must play as long as 13 healthy players, including a goalkeeper, are available. If this is not possible, people with Covid-19 may be replaced by players who have been nominated.
Corona cases also in the Netherlands, Italy and Austria
Last weekend, the respective teams announced positive corona tests for the Dutch midfielder Jackie Groenen, Valentina Cernoia from Italy and the Austrian Laura Wienroither. For the Austrians, striker Lisa Kolb had previously failed due to a Covid 19 disease. The first corona case of the tournament had already become public on Friday (08.07.22): English defender Lotte Wubben-Moy was affected, who was not used in the hosts’ 1-0 opening win against Austria.
