First asparagus out of the ground and that’s early: ‘We are still shaking on our legs’

Good news for asparagus lovers! The white gold is already being extracted from the ground. That is considerably earlier than previous years.

“Unbelievable,” says farmer Hermen Hoorn from Huis ter Heide. “We’re still shaking a bit on our legs.” Normally, Hoorn gets the first asparagus out of the ground in the third or fourth week of March.

The fact that Hoorn can harvest so early this year does not come as a complete surprise. He started an experiment on part of his plot last year. Hoorn has built a kind of tunnel over the asparagus ridges. “It’s actually just a small greenhouse. When the sun shines, it gets to thirty or forty degrees in the tunnel. There is no wind below. So this works like a little oven.”
