First 150 Ukrainians move to former prison | 1Limburg

The first 150 Ukrainian refugees will be received next week in the former Overmaze prison in Maastricht. This is a group of mainly women and children.

Alderman Anita Bastiaens writes this in a letter to the city council.

Move
The Ukrainians are still staying at Hotel Kaboom. They can stay there until June 10. After that, the hotel also expects regular hotel guests. The move will start on Tuesday.

refurbish
The old prison has been prepared for the first 150 Ukrainians. After that, the entire building will be refurbished ‘at lightning speed’, writes Bastiaens. In total, 400 refugees must eventually be housed in the former prison in the Maastricht district of Limmel.

The Ukrainian refugees can stay in Overmaze for one year. In addition to the transfer from the Security Region, refugees who are currently staying in private shelters can also find a place here.

The building will have a caretaker, camera surveillance and 24/7 security.
