Fireworks on the field at Helmond Sport, game temporarily stopped

The match between Helmond Sport and MVV was temporarily stopped after 17 minutes on Friday evening. Supporters of the Maastricht club have thrown fireworks on the field from the outing. According to the new rules of the KNVB, which have been in force since Friday, the match must be stopped immediately.

“The MVV audience has not read the statement of the KNVB…”, reported Helmond Sport. “They throw fireworks on the field.”

MVV captain Matteo Waem then went to the away section to address the supporters and explain that they must behave if they want the match to be played. The supporters responded by chanting ‘play football, play football, play football’.

After a cooling-off period of about fifteen minutes, the game was resumed.

Tightened rules
The KNVB has tightened the rules after a Feyenoord fan threw a lighter against the head of Ajax midfielder Davy Klaassen last Wednesday. From now on, a match will be stopped immediately if a player or referee from the audience is hit by an object.

If objects are thrown onto the field, the game will be temporarily stopped. Players and referees then go to the locker room. A second time, the duel is permanently stopped. This also applies if a supporter enters the field.
