Catalonia is facing one of the most complicated summers of the last decade in the fight against fire and has already suffered so far this year a total of 459 forest fires that have affected 6,543 hectares, the worst figure since the flames swept through 17,922 hectares in 2012.
According to data from the Rural Agents, despite the fact that the 2022 forest season is still active -and with all the alerts activated by the two heat waves chained in the last two weeks-, so far this year There have already been more hectares affected than in each course as of 2012.

Much of the blame for this lies with the simultaneity of fires in the first fortnight of June and the great fire of the Pont de Vilomara, in the Barcelona region of Bages, which has burned 1,743 hectares, of which 449.69 in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park, and which, according to the main hypothesis with the that the Rural Agents work, was intentional.
Catalonia has some two million hectares of forest -two thirds of its territory is forest-, therefore, in extreme conditions such as the current ones, with a cumulative two-year drought and chained heat wavesthe Generalitat has had to restrict access to eleven massifs and limit recreational and agricultural activity in the natural environment until Monday night in 357 municipalities in 27 counties.
