Firefighter Jean-François (49) killed in fire at Sheraton hotel in Brussels: the man who saved several lives on K2

Helping people, climbing the ultimate mountains and being a firefighter at heart. Those were the things that characterized 49-year-old Jean-François ‘Jeff’ Spelmans. He saved two lives on the second highest mountain in the world. The sergeant major was called up on Tuesday night with his team for a fire in the former Sheraton hotel in Brussels. A place that Jeff knew by now; he had been there a week earlier with his climbing team after a construction site accident. This time, the intervention ended tragically, when the escalator collapsed above him.
