There was a fire on the grounds of the hotel in Albergen intended for asylum reception on Monday morning. That’s what the police have let us know on Twitter. The fire was discovered at 6:15 a.m., police say NRC, and did not rage in Landhuis ‘t Elshuys itself. Police are investigating how the fire started.
There has been a lot of activity around the hotel in Albergen in Overijssel in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum and Migration, VVD) announced that he had ordered COA to buy the hotel to accommodate up to three hundred asylum seekers, without the permission of the municipality.
The news caused great unrest in Albergen. Residents and the municipality felt sidelined and believe that 300 asylum seekers in a place of 3,500 inhabitants is “too many”. The owner of the hotel is now trying to prevent the sale, although the purchase contract has already been signed. The COA has therefore instituted summary proceedings, which will be filed this Monday.
