Fire in Vught prison cell, detainee inhaled smoke

A fire raged in a cell for a short time in a cell in the prison in Vught. According to a spokesperson for the safety region, it was a burning mattress. The detainee who was in the cell in question was taken to hospital.

The occupant of the cell inhaled smoke and developed breathing problems as a result. He is being taken to hospital for a check-up, says a spokeswoman for the Judicial Institutions Service. According to her, the fire was extinguished by the prison’s own staff and the fire brigade is conducting an additional check.

The spokesperson for the safety region could not say anything about the cause of the fire or what happened in the cell. All emergency services had come to the prison, including an air ambulance.
