The large dune fire that raged in Wassenaar on Friday has been under control since 2.30 pm. The fire is estimated to have raged in an area of approximately 800 square meters.
The fire brigade turned out en masse on Friday for the dune fire that started near the Duinrell amusement park. Contrary to previous reports, the amusement park was not (and not partly) evacuated. The fire brigade did use the Duinrell site to get to the fire.
According to a spokesperson for the amusement park, the fire raged about 1 kilometer from the park. The amusement park, the Tiki pool and the holiday park could remain open.
The fire brigade sent several fire trucks to the dunes. A fire brigade drone also went that way to monitor the flames from the air. The first report of the fire came in around 12:15 p.m. Around 12.30 pm the fire brigade scaled up to a very large fire.
Duinrell is located in the wooded dune area on the edge of Wassenaar, about 10 kilometers northeast of The Hague. The amusement park is also located at the Meijendel nature reserve, part of the Hollandse Duinen National Park. Due to the drought of recent weeks, a fire in the dunes can spread quickly.
The fire service thinks it will take some time to put out the fire.
