Firefighters continue to fight against the forest fire in the Lieberoser Heide in southeastern Brandenburg.

267 firefighters with a total of 66 vehicles were involved in extinguishing the fire early on Wednesday morning. They are trying to narrow down the affected area of about 50 hectares.

“It is still difficult to say how the fire will develop during the day, but we suspect a moderate spread of the fire in a northeasterly direction,” said a spokesman for the Lausitz fire department.

The extinguishing work is difficult, mainly because of the persistent drought. It hasn’t rained in the Lieberose Heide area for weeks, which is why the deep layers of soil in particular are very dry and susceptible to the flames.

The fire in the Lieberose Heide broke out on Monday. The emergency services cannot enter the area because it is loaded with ammunition. Large forest fires had already raged in the nature reserve and former military training area in previous years.
