It all started three years ago from a 50th anniversary gift. from Åland Olle Dahl got a few days’ mustard course in southern Sweden as a surprise from his wife.

This year, Dahl won his mustard in the one held in the United States World Wide Mustard Competition in the sweet-hot series competition.

This was the first time since 1995 that in the competition organized in Wisconsin, a Finnish mustard is number one in its own category.

Dahl tells Iltalehte that he received an “awakening” at the course three years ago. The course was led by a guru in his field, who had to make great mustard.

– However, I told my wife that I didn’t think the mustard was very good. We could certainly do better.

Dahl went from words to action. He ordered the necessary equipment for cooking mustard, and started testing different flavors and ways of making mustards.

In the spring of 2021, Klosterprodukter started the production of premium mustard.

The Dahls live on the island of Kökar, which is popular among sailors and bird watchers. Gradually, tourists discovered the local mustard and praised it. Someone mentioned about the World Championship being organized in the USA and urged to participate.

– Our daughter lives in California and when we visited her at Christmas, we also packed mustard in the suitcase. I asked our daughter to send the mustards to the competition organized in March, Dahl recounts the journey of his mustard to victory.

In a phone call in the spring, the organizers had told Dahl that 350 mustard producers from 70 different countries participated in the competition.

Klosterprodukter’s production facilities are limited, so only a small amount of mustard is produced at a time. Klosterprodukter

After the win, Dahl didn’t have to think about what to spend his time on.

– At first this was a hobby, but now I make mustard day and night, he laughs on the phone.

Dahl is in charge of production and his wife’s labels. The difficulty for the mustard company is the equipment that is already too small. But getting bigger ones is so expensive that Dahl hasn’t taken that risk yet.

Due to the high demand, Dahl has to constantly prepare his mustards.

– When I save enough, I buy bigger devices. Now our mustard is still limited edition, says Dahl.

For now, you can buy his mustard at, for example, Helsinki’s Old Market Hall, Max’s Fish in Espoo or K-supermarket Hyrrä in Tuusula.
