The women’s national volleyball team still did not manage to secure a place in next year’s EC final tournament on Wednesday. The Czech Republic was better at home in Tabor 3-0 (25–19, 25–18, 25–21).
On Saturday, Finland will face Montenegro in Joensuu, which requires at least two set wins. The best two from the EC group will go to the final tournament.
The Czech Republic already secured a place in the European Championships with their previous match win last weekend. Now it also secured the group victory. Before their last game against Iceland, the country has lost only one set in the qualifiers.
On Wednesday, the Czech Republic’s game confidence was of a tougher class. The home team’s attack percentage was 55, and it took the necessary points in the decisive moments of the match. Finland took the save points of the match 10–9 and the aces tied 3–3.
Finland entered the game with a clear good feeling and led the opening set 14–11. However, the home team clearly won the set 25–19. The second and third sets were controlled by the Czech Republic, although Finland hung in the game.
– We kept up well, but a few too many breakpoints for the home team in bad places. The pass was not quite as good as in the qualifiers so far. It didn’t quite work out today, general player Jessica Kosonen said in a press release from the Finnish Volleyball Association.
Suvi Kokkonen (13/+10) was again Finland’s power woman. Promising excerpts were seen towards the end of the chopper From Piia Korhose (8/+3), for whom the game was the hundredth international match of his career. The home team was the most efficient Michaela Mlejnkova (17/+10).
About a hundred people had come to cheer on the Finnish women. The basketball association had paid for one busload of Susijeng fans to attend. The national basketball team plays the first group games of the EC tournament in Prague.
– It was amazing to play in this atmosphere, with both supporters cheering. It’s a joke if it would have been possible to squeeze a profit out of this, Kosonen said.
