Runner Nathalie Blomqvist21, broke the 34 – year – old Finnish record on Saturday.
Blomqvist ran a 22-year-old SE in the international 1,500-meter race in Karlsruhe, Germany. The new record time is 4.11.36.
The previous record, more than 30 years ago, was Carita Sunellin clocked at 4.12.95. Blomqvist’s previous record of 1,500 meters was 4.15.13.
– The pace was good and I was able to run in the pose suitably relaxed. Coach Tom Andtbacka Blomqvist said I could run between 4.10-4.11, but I didn’t really believe it, Blomqvist said in a SUL press release.
Blomqvist took the lead in the race after 900 meters. However, he finished second in the final meters.
Germany won Vera Coutellier at 4.11.30.
– The run still felt really good when there were 200 meters left, Blomqvist described.
Earlier this spring, Blomqvist won four kilometers of gold in the cross-country championship at Nakkila.
The goal for the summer is to get to the Munich European Championships with the help of ranking points. The direct result limit is 4.06.00.
– When I get more good, hard races, time drops from that, but 4.06 is still quite far away.
Blomqvist has won silver from the 800 meters and bronze from the 1,500 meters at the Kaleva Games.
