The crowns of the ice hockey king and queen remained in Sweden, as Finland was not a challenger to its western neighbor in the World Cup finals.

In the finals played in Växjö, the Finnish men offered a good resistance to the competition host. The blue and white team rose at the beginning of the opening half Teemu Määtä with a goal to level 1–1, but before the break, Sweden had time to strike twice more.

There were no goals in the second half, so Sweden took the championship 3–1. The end result could have been many times harsher, but the goalkeeper Kimmo Kyllönen fended off several Swedish top places. He was also awarded as the best player of his team.

The teams met in the preliminary round and played to a 2–2 draw. Finland defeated the United States, Kazakhstan and Norway in the tournament.

In the women’s final, the Swedes offered a cold ride. The home team beat Finland no less than 15–0 and continue as world champions. Swedish women have won 11 out of 12 possible championships. The Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships have been played since 2004.

Sweden’s most effective player had scored six goals Tilda Ström.

Finnish women were clear underdogs. In the last games, when Russia was still participating, Finland took bronze.
